2012 Holiday Gift Guide: Stocking stuffers

Hopefully by now you've crossed all those names off your list! I usually don't put too much thought into stocking stuffers, but I found some great little items this year that just couldn't be ignored. I'm dying over these gold dipped wooden pencils and fun temporary tattoos.

Hope you enjoyed this year's gift guides! May your holidays with your loved ones be merry and bright. xo

2012 Holiday Gift Guide: Boyfriend

It doesn't take a lot to get an impressive gift for my guy...like I'm pretty sure I could gift him a $2 game app for his phone and he'd be a happy camper. BUT it's Christmas, so items that he didn't even know he wanted like a leather duffle with an extra bottom compartment will be sure to make its way into his gym locker and weekend trips.

I haven't been to the snow since I was a kid. So a few weekends ago when an impromptu Tahoe trip turned into a snow flurry, you can bet I was out there giggling and frolicking in the fresh white winterscape like a child. I snapped this photo on the drive down the mountain. It was a pretty magical trip, one that we all agreed must happen on several occasions this winter season.

Free download >> Christmas gift tags

Pardon me while I continue to wallow in my turkey coma. I always saw the day after Thanksgiving as a day to continue to relax and gobble on leftover turkey sandwiches, but in truth it now marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. While shopping I'm always thinking ahead of how I'm going to wrap these presents for my loved ones, so I thought it would be only fitting to design these printable Christmas gift tags for your gift wrapping goodness!

2012 Holiday Gift Guide: The Hostess

I love having people over, but sometimes hosting parties can give me little cases of anxiety. There's the deep cleaning of the house the morning of, worrying if we'll run out of alcohol, not being able to stop staring at and fixing the damn floor rug that people keep haphazardly bunching under their feet, etc. It makes me thankful for people who are good at hosting and enjoy it; let's not forget these awesome people who are opening their homes to us this holiday season! I'll kick off this year's Holiday Gift Guide with The Hostess...don't show up empty handed at Thanksgiving!

You may have noticed that I've stopped posting on the blog on the regular. To be honest I kind of lost interest in developing inspiration posts instead finding it equally if not more fulfilling to just pin all of the design themes on Pinterest that get my creative juices flowing. {You can follow me here!} I might still pop over here from time to time to share special projects, events {eh hem, wedding!}, new products from my shop, and of course monthly desktop calendars and maybe the occasional gift guide or two ;)  Add me to your reader and you can be informed of when these little goodies are posted! Thank you for support and understanding, and now on to November's desktop calendar!

During a rousing game of "Would you rather" with my sisters in a 9 hour car ride a few weeks back, I realized that I would rather live at the beach than in the mountains. At the beach the ocean is always moving and lapping at the shores...kind of offers a level of comfort that the stillness of the mountains lacks. Maybe The Blair Witch messed with my head, but a maze of trees in the middle of nowhere is scary. And the ghosts from PacMan are scary too...no other arcade game would make me squeal more than getting cornered by a PacMan ghost. Put 'em together and you've got a desktop calendar to take you in to the Halloween season.

15 fall essentials

Fall is my favorite season: a time to cozy up inside by the fire, crunch fallen leaves, trips to the pumpkin patch and countless Starbucks runs for PSLs {double, tall, 4 pump with whip is where it's at}. Here are some other essentials for the season...

Pink peacoat. Just because it's fall doesn't mean it has to be drab. I love this warm peacoat from JCrew in a bright hue with sparkly gold buttons.
Knit sweater. A big, loose sweater is so charming.
Boots with hardware. Adds interest and edge and keeps your feet dry walking through the inevitable puddle.
Home sweet home print. I'm focusing on sprucing things up around our house since our afternoons will now most likely be spent under a blanket on the couch.
Scented candle. Around the holidays, Matt's mom lights up her entire home with scented candles. I love walking in the front door to the yummy scents and am going to start lighting up our house too.
Match holder. For our fireplace and those candles. Isn't the squirrel too cute? He'd be like our little helper.
Colored clutch. Adds a little pop of color to your outerwear neutrals.

Long sleeved jersey knit dress. Perfect for layering under a coat paired with wool tights.
Infinity knit scarf. Keeps you warm without the unecessary dangle of a traditional scarf.
Wool socks. Best suited with a chic pair of boots.
Patterned silk blouse. A dose of feminine style to break up the heavy world of knits.
Red lipstick. Pairs perfectly with flushed cheeks from the autumn breeze.
Colored toe ballet flats. I live in my ballet flats, and a little colorblocked toe is an easy way for these flats to be a little more special than the every day shoe.
Wooden serving platter. I always put out snacks for our guests, even if they're coming over as a casual stopby. Cheese and crackers would look so handsome on this board.
Emerald colored jewelry. I'm obsessed with pairing this stone with so many neutrals...especially with the charcoal grey of that jersey knit dress!

NEW in the shop >> 2013 Wrapping Paper Calendar

Yay! The brand spankin new 2013 Wrapping Paper Calendar is here! I've spent countless months designing patterns, laying out pages, soucing vendors and materials and am super proud to be able to show it to you today!

The 16 month wall calendar features a monthly full page grid to write down all your notes and appointments. When the month is over, reuse the backside of the sheet to wrap your gifts in a pretty and original wrapping paper!

A little bit of 2012 is in there too, I've already been jotting down all my to-do's for the next few months. Aren't the elephants so cute?? They're my fave, that's how I was able to justify looking at them for the next four months.

A big thank you to Unicorn Graphics for working with me to bring this calendar to life! Head on over to the etsy shop to order yours and have a year full of pretty gifts! {it makes a great gift itself too!}

happy birthday to 'ya!

This month my dear sister, Saralyn turns 25!! Yay!! We're all super excited to be able to celebrate her birthday properly this year {last year our older sister, Katie's wedding pretty much trumped her birthday weekend}, and it's such a milestone age that it seems only appropriate to make a big deal out of it.

SO in honor of the Birthday Girl, for the month of September I am offering my Happy Birthday cards for just $1! Pretty nice, right?

I'm so lucky to have my best friend and my sister rolled into one little package. I love laughing with this gal, deliberately going to teeny bopper movies, consuming dangerous amounts of ramen, hiding sharp peg boards under each other's covers, and in general obsessing over Teen Wolf. I'm pretty sure we're gonna turn into Selma and Patty when we get older...if we aren't already. Happy Birthday Saralyn! xo

Free download >> September desktop calendar

We were in Carmel last weekend for Matt's friend's wedding. The morning of the ceremony we had to be checked out of our hotel by 11am and had a few hours to kill before heading over to the wedding site. We went to breakfast and took leisurely strolls down Ocean Avenue and plopped ourselves down on in a park situated in the center of town. I snapped this shot of these twisted tree branches in the park. So pretty. The pace of Carmel is so wonderfully slow, we totally want to retire in this little beach town.

essentials >> labor day bbq

This summer we've pretty much become barbeque experts. We'll even go over to friends' houses and Matt will get put on the grill duty 'cause he's proven himself the master. Most people consider Labor Day weekend as the last hurrah to summer and will be firin' up the ol' grill one last time before sending them into hibernation. I'll miss our weekend barbeque parties but I'm totally looking forward to cozy-sitting-by-the-fire parties too. Happy holiday weekend, friends.

mid-century feminine

I'm such a sucker for mid-century modern rooms with touches of feminine style. I appreciate homes that don't take themselves too seriously but rather are a reflection of the resident's artistic and fun personality. I'm now convinced that you can't go wrong with a yellow sofa when incorporated into a well curated space.

Breakfast at Victory's No. 10 >> Avocado & egg breakfast pizza

Who doesn't love avocado? I'm slightly allergic but will still camp out at the guacamole bowl with plenty of water on hand...it's well worth the pain. This is another example of "put an egg on it and it's breakfast" style of meals that I seem to be falling victim to. I'll seriously buy the 18 pack family size carton of eggs at the store and it'll be gone in a week, we're like Gaston in Beauty and the Beast {"when I was a lad I ate four dozen eggs..."}

Anyway, here's the recipe below. I used a guacamole seasoning package from the produce section instead of the seasonings listed because I can't eat spicy food without my eyes watering {wow, just revealing all kinds of my food kryptonites today}

Recipe adapted from Justina Blakeney
Greek or pocketless pita, or any kind of flat bread
Ripe avocado
Organic egg {I used regular}
Sea salt, pepper, chili flakes, cumin, cumin seed, extra virgin olive oil {I used guacamole seasoning...}

Toast pita until crisp, mash avocado and spread on pita, drizzle with a dash of lemon, olive oil and spices, place egg cooked to your liking on top and serve.

essentials >> wedding crashers

This weekend Matt and I are headed out to Carmel to attend one of his old friends' wedding. We haven't been to Carmel since getting engaged and are planning to go back to the cafe where he proposed. I'm pretty sure it'll be magical. We also haven't been to a wedding since we've started planning our own, so it'll be a great source of inspiration as we start to finalize our plans. Here are a few essentials for any wedding guest:

Heidi Merrick Fall 2012

I love Heidi Merrick's Fall collection completely. The neutral palettes with pops of bright saturated hues makes for a wardrobe with a bit of cheer for the colder months ahead.

a few of my favorite things...

wear // home // create
My fall wardrobe will be consisting of tomboy basics. A soft chambray shirt and an oversized blazer with dark shades will essentially be my uniform. I love these throw pillows from Ferm Living! The geometric shapes and neon colors would look so cute in our home. Of course the girls from A Beautiful Mess are super creative in the kitchen; and Emma's post on puff pastry pizzas inspired me to have our own pizza making party last weekend!

We bought puff pastry sheets along with some basic pizza toppings and had our guests bring over the toppings of their choice to make our own little personal pizzas! My favorite was made with mozzarella, tomato, basil, mushrooms and gold potatoes. It was so fun and so yummy!

Keep up with more of my favorite things on Pinterest!

sneak peak >> 2013 Wrapping Paper Calendar

Lately I've been hard at work developing Victory Paper Designs' wrapping paper calendar for 2013! {remember 2012's calendar?}. Gosh, things really do get released earlier and earlier every year, like I'm pretty sure Macy's will be decked out in wreaths and giant ornaments next month. I'm just wrapping things up {pun intended} and I wanted to give you guys a little sneak peak at a few of the patterns I've designed! This year I really sat down and invested some hard time in designing these patterns. These are all designs that I personally would be excited to see on a gift from a loved one, and have adorned on the wall of my office from month to month! Just a little taste, more to come soon! xo

Breakfast at Victory's No. 9 >> Eggs benedict

Confession: I had never had eggs benedict before attempting this recipe. While preparing the sauce on the stove I had no idea how it was supposed to taste but I do know it was all kinds of yummy. I would say to just lightly toast the English muffins as well as we ended up eating them with a fork and knife. The fact that Matt licked the sauce and egg mixture off his knife after consumption should tell you something about the level of tastiness.

Adapted from Allrecipes.com
Makes 4 servings

4 egg yolks
3 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 pinch ground white pepper
1/8 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon water
1 cup butter, melted
1/4 teaspoon salt
8 eggs
1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar
8 strips Canadian-style bacon
4 English muffins, split
2 tablespoons butter, softened

To Make Hollandaise: Fill the bottom of a double boiler part-way with water. Make sure that water does not touch the top pan. Bring water to a gentle simmer. In the top of the double boiler, whisk together egg yolks, lemon juice, white pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and 1 tablespoon water. {I just ended up simmering all the ingredients in a saucepan as we don't have a double boiler...worked fine for me...}

Add the melted butter to egg yolk mixture 1 or 2 tablespoons at a time while whisking yolks constantly. If hollandaise begins to get too thick, add a teaspoon or two of hot water. Continue whisking until all butter is incorporated. Whisk in salt, then remove from heat. Place a lid on pan to keep sauce warm.

Preheat oven on broiler setting. To Poach Eggs: Fill a large saucepan with 3 inches of water. Bring water to a gentle simmer, then add vinegar. Carefully break eggs into simmering water, and allow to cook for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes. Yolks should still be soft in center. Remove eggs from water with a slotted spoon and set on a warm plate

While eggs are poaching, brown the bacon in a medium skillet over medium-high heat and toast the English muffins on a baking sheet under the broiler. {or, you know, a toaster works great}

Spread toasted muffins with softened butter, and top each one with a slice of bacon, followed by one poached egg. Place 2 muffins on each plate and drizzle with hollandaise sauce. Serve immediately.

I'm always looking to DwellStudio for the prettiest and most graphic homewares. We have a few of their throw pillows in our bedroom that are so modern and chic. I'd be like a kid in a candy store in their new flagship store in SoHo; I could seriously walk out with everything, especially that charming gazelle sidetable in gold...
